Asterisk is an opensource IP PBX system, developed by Digium. Since it is opensource and free to download, it has quickly gained a large number of supporters and users. It is now a common IP PBX solution for smaller companies on a very tight budget.
Being cheap does not mean it is not fit for the business world; in fact, Asterisk is used as an IP PBX for an emergency response team in South Africa. We also use Asterisk for our Virtual PBX solution.
Asterisk also has financial backing; Digium, who developed Asterisk, has received a $13.8m investment in August 2006. Asterisk is also actively being developed and there are often new features available and with the low costs associated with upgrading, you can easily stay up to date with the latest version.
