A recent BBC report tackles the issue regarding shrinking availability of internet bandwidth caused by online videos delivered by services such as the iPlayer. Is this really going to be an issue or is it scaremongering?

AT&T’s answer to the question is “Yes” – online video will consume all internet bandwidth within 2 years.

Their Vice President of legal affairs, Jim Cicconi, stated that online video’s overall traffic will increase from 30% to 80% within 2 years. He also was reported to have said that high definition video could increase this even more dramatically.

Professor Andrew Odlyzko and a report by Cisco both suggest that there is nothing to panic about. In fact the projected growth of internet traffic should be more than manageable.
