Our final instalment of VoIP Myths & Facts looks at why businesses need to seriously consider VoIP if they are looking for a telephony solution.  We also look at why VoIP is overtaking the traditional telephony market.

Myth #3: VoIP Is Not Right For My Business

VoIP can fit well within any business. There are solutions that could fit businesses from very small right up to enterprise level.

For larger companies that have different branches, VoIP can offer significant cost savings by routing inter-office calls over the internet connection. Employees can have their extension numbers follow them so that they can make and receive calls from any office phone. This is very beneficial for employees that are often mobile between different branches and still need to be able to receive their incoming calls.

For small businesses, a hosted IP PBX solution means you can have a fully featured business telephone system without the associated costs of hardware and maintenance contracts.

Fact #3: Traditional is dead

Most vendors these days sell VoIP enabled PBXs to their customers, even though most buyers are not aware of it. In fact, VoIP enabled PBX sales have already exceeded those of traditional PBXs. The important thing to ensure is that the PBX you invest in today will be usable tomorrow. Some VoIP enabled PBXs do not bring much benefit to businesses, it is not much more than another way to wire up phones".

A good example is the Nortel BCM which is a popular choice. It can become expensive for fast growing companies or businesses that have flexible working practises.  Every additional extension / mailbox / feature incurs more costs, and click to dial integration requires users to change contact phone numbers with a 9 prefix. This could cause greater problems if users synchronize their contact data with their mobile device. On top of that, there is very limited control a business would have over this kind of PBX.

While this may be fine for a small company that only wants to make phone calls in / out from the office, it becomes a problem once there is a need to establish a more corporate image. A simple Auto attendant IVR can make a big difference to the way customers perceive your business, and the ability to add Least Cost Routing to your outbound calls will keep the FD happy.
